Pecos National Historical Park
Two miles south of Pecos on SR 63, Pecos National Historical Park preserves the ruins of one of the largest ancient pueblos as well as two mission churches built by Franciscans in the 17th and 18th centuries. The American Indian population dwindled over the years because of famine, diseases, emigration and the changing needs of the mission. In 1838 the remaining Pecos people moved to Jémez Pueblo.
Visitors can walk through the ruins on a 1.2-mile self-guiding trail; guided 1- to 2-hour tours are available by reservation. A visitor center offers a film depicting Pecos' history and displays hand-carved furniture, artifacts from excavations, tin chandeliers and original artwork.
Picnicking is permitted. Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum. Daily 8-6, Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day; 8-4:30, rest of year. Closed Jan. 1 and Dec. 25. Admission $3. Phone (505) 757-6414 , ext. 1.
